In 2006, Cumerio, one of Europe’s leading independent copper companies, announced that it was to build a brand new refinery on the site of its existing refinery at Pirdop, 80km east of the Bulgarian capital Sofia. Some e82 million is now being invested in the project, which will see Pirdop’s annual refining capacity increase from 60,000 tonnes of cathodes to 180,000 tonnes and smelting capacity increase by 20,000 tonnes. Abigail Saltmarsh reports.
