Wind turbines not a risk to human health, says MIT study

Living in close proximity to wind farms does not harm human health, according to a study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The review took into consideration health effects such as stress, annoyance and sleep disturbance among others that have, in the past, been raised in association with living close to wind turbines."No clear or consistent association is seen between noise from wind turbines and any reported disease or other indicator of harm to human health" the study found. The MIT authors considered a number of case studies in Europe and the U.S. to assess the impact of infrasound and quality of life for the populations close to wind farms. While complaints from residents were more common during the construction of wind farms, other technologies such as gas and oi...

Can rail help deliver a brighter future for Europe?

08/12/2014

The Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies (CER) and the Italian Presidency of the EU are jointly organising a political debate on the role of rail in underpinning Europe’s future mobility and growth on 4 December. The event will be a good opportunity to consider the obstacles preventing rail from realising its full potential and the potential policy measures at EU and national level to remove these barriers and reinforce rail’s competitiveness. The debate will focus on how to realise the Transport White Paper vision on high-speed and cross-border rail services and how to seize the opportunities that rail freight opens up for Europe’s industry and economy. It will also touch upon the role of rail infrastructure as a bedrock for growth, the need to create a level pl...

Anuga FoodTec 2015: Robots have become indispensable in food and beverage production

The world of robotics is currently facing another breakthrough: small, lightweight, comfortable and above all, flexible - that's how engineers envisage the industrial lightweight robots of the future. The greatest revolution, however, will be the direct cooperation between man and machine - without a separating safety fence. The advances in automation cannot be overlooked at the Anuga FoodTec show held 24-27 March 2015 in Cologne, Germany. In the future, these "steel colleagues" of the food industry will be able to do more complex tasks than is the case today. The TV series Real Humans shows what happens when people and robots live together. So-called Hubots (human robots) are capable of learning and used as domestic servants or factory workers. Real Humans looks into the future, but mirr...

03/12/2014

On 3 December 2014 Telenor and TeliaSonera entered into an agreement to merge their Danish operations into a new joint venture in which the parties will own 50 percent each. The new joint venture will create a robust mobile operator which is able to increase investments in networks to the benefit of our customers. The new company will have a combined mobile subscriber base of around 3.5 million. With a combined mobile subscriber market share of approximately 40%, revenues of more than DKK 9 billion and a significant synergy potential, the transaction creates a robust operator. The need for consolidation in the Danish telecom market has been apparent for a while as operators face continued pressure on revenues and profitability, limiting the room for investments and innovation. Telenor an...
